MUMBAI

From a cluster of seven low-lying swampy islands to a hustling, bustling modern metropolis. Mumbai, or Bombay, as was known the world over till 1996, was originally inhabited by the Koli fisher folk. Few cities have witnessed a transition as grand as Mumbai. A city of opportunities where 200 families migrate each day to make or lose their fortune!

Mumbai caters to all tastes. It has galleries, shopping plazas, cinemas, theatres, spas and health care clinics that rejuvenate and recharge the stressed and strained traveller. Mumbai, a multi coloured, multi lingual cosmopolitan city, comprises of people from all parts of India, where dreams are woven on the silver screen.

Mumbai houses the Gold and Diamond markets and has the busiest stock exchange in the country. Last but not the least, it is a gourmet’s delight with plenty of speciality restaurants. Mumbai is a melting point of various races and cultures, a city of dreams and reality; a mega metropolis that never sleeps.

Mumbai’s varied cultural treasure includes architectural structures dating back to the Portuguese and gothic styles. Historical and heritage monuments stand with grandeur and harmony amidst sky-rise structures of modern architecture.

The panoramic 4 km drive along “Queen’s Necklace” of Marine Drive, catches the golden rays of the setting sun and outlines the breathtakingly beautiful skyline of Mumbai. The waters of the Arabian Sea set the backdrop for Haji-Ali, the revered mausoleum of the Muslim community. The Hanging Gardens and the Kamala Nehru Park atop the Malabar Hill and Mani Bhavan, where Gandhiji spent quiet moments of his life, are places worth a visit. The 100 year old colonial Municipality building, the Prince of Wales museum and the Italian–Gothic style Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (formerly Victoria Terminus) are landmarks in their own right. But none like The Gateway of India, an imposing structure built to commemorate the visit of King George V to India in 1911.
