city is the central point for tourists who wish to visit Ajanta and Ellora
Caves. However, Aurangabad has its own share of Buddhist caves, carved from a
hillside in the 7th century A.D.
AJANTA CAVES
Nestling in an inner fold of the Sahyadri hills, 100 kms. from Aurangabad in the shape of a mammoth horseshoe, are the 30 rock-cut caves of Ajanta. The caves date back to the 2nd century B.C.
Discovered in 1819 by a group of British officers, this startling achievement took around 600 years to create. Carved with a little more than a hammer and chisel, Ajanta, once the retreat of Buddhist monastic orders, features several ‘Chaityas’ and ‘Viharas’. The exquisite paintings and sculptures of Buddha’s life belong to the Mahayan period.
ELLORA CAVES
The famous caves lay 33 kms south of Aurangabad. There are 34 rock cut temples representing the Buddhist, Jain and Hindu faiths. The centerpiece of Ellora is the Kailash Temple. Although the carvings at Ellora belong to three religions, the structures are often similar. The caves were carved out of a hill range running north to south. Ellora caves are amongst the most important historical monuments in India.

ITINERARY
DAY 01 : MUMBAI – AURANGABAD - ELLORA
Fly to Aurangabad. Arrive at Aurangabad and transfer to hotel. Evening at leisure. Overnight at the hotel. Overnight at the hotel.
After breakfast, proceed on a full day tour of Ajanta Caves (90 kms). The caves comprise of Chaitya Halls dedicated to lord Buddha and Viharas for Buddhist monks for meditation and teachings. Return to Aurangabad. Evening at leisure. Overnight at the hotel.
DAY 03 : AURANGABAD – ELLORA - MUMBAI
After breakfast, checkout from hotel. Proceed to Ellora caves, the central attraction being the Kailash Temple, chiseled by hand from a single massive rock. After that, proceed for a city tour including places like Bibi-ka-maqbara, Panchakki, Aurangabad caves, Daulatabad Fort and a visit to the shawl factory. Transfer to airport to board flight to Mumbai.
